Bathroom Safety for Senior Care

Bathroom safety is an important topic when it comes to caring for your adult family member, so it is important to make sure that this area in the home is safe. Many accidents occur in the bathroom, especially slips and falls that can be quite hard for seniors to recover from. Fortunately, it is easy to take the steps to provide adequate bathroom safety for a senior and maximize their potential for using the bathroom on their own, safe and sound each time.
No matter how hard you try, bathrooms are subject to spills and puddles of water, whether it is on the floor, the bottom of the bathtub, or on the countertops. To avoid the risk of slips and falls, apply non-skid safety strips or decals on the bottom of the tub. Another great choice is a nonslip bathroom mat that can be used in the shower or by the side of the tub. To give a senior more control when getting out of the bathtub or using the toilet, also install a grab rail around both fixtures.
To help your elder see in the bathroom, be sure to install light fixtures that provide adequate lighting, and don’t forget to add them in the medicine cabinet to avoid the risk of taking the wrong medication. The water thermostat should also be turned down in order to prevent burns and a telephone should be placed in the bathroom in case your elder needs medical attention. Also be sure to keep everything within close reach or at an accessible height. Lastly, cover up sharp edges around the countertops and remove bathroom door locks.
