Caring for an elder in your family may not always be an easy job, but it is certainly one that holds great importance. To care for your elder, be sure that you have a good support system in place. Reach out to siblings or extended family and share in the responsibilities as much as possible. Not only will this help in your own ability to effectively care for your loved one, but it will bring more success and happiness to your elder. Keep in mind that even a simple trip to the supermarket can serve as helping out in the family.
Next, you will need to safety proof your home. Make sure all areas are well lit and free of clutter, paying close attention to the stairs where most accidents occur. Install rails next to the bathtub and toilet for extra support and keep medicines in a well-lit area, clearly labeled or separated for each day. Also remove area rugs or secure them to the floor using double sided tape, as these can cause unnecessary slips and falls. Another great tip to caring for your senior is to have an alarm system in place so that he or she always has access to medical help if needed.
In order to care for a senior, you will also need to be organized. Keep important papers from doctors and insurance companies filed away and post necessary phone numbers on the refrigerator. Keep an appointment book or dry erase calendar nearby to post important dates and appointments. If possible, sign your elder up for classes at a senior center for interaction and a breath of fresh air for the both of you.
